Home to us is 20 wooded acres in an area known as “The Lost Pines”. Located just east of Austin and easy 2 1/2 to 3 hour drives from either Houston and Dallas.
Being out in the country our dogs enjoy the freedom of large tree shaded yards where they run and play –building good muscle, sense of smell, vision and hearing. We have a small herd of donkeys that love to interact with the new pups and will even lean up against the fences for a scratch. The dogs have even developed a game with our donkeys, where they will race along the fence lines to see who is fastest.
Another advantage of country living is that our pups quickly learn to detect and alert us of any unusual noise or movement. Nothing and nobody can approach our home without triggering a “Bark Alert”. This even includes rabbits, opossums, raccoons, skunks, squirrels and coyotes who have the nerve to move too close to the house.
The downside to country living is the insects and varmints that also share our land. We have great respect for our environment as well as concern over risk of exposure to deadly chemicals found in most products commonly used for pest control. This has resulted in our constant search for alternative ways of dealing with the pest. The results of our discussions with local farmers, ranchers and lots of on-line research has produced some extremely earth friendly answers. We now use ducks, guinea fowl, chickens and pheasants for extremely efficient bug control (and get fresh eggs as an added benefit).
Our problem with coyotes lead us to our donkeys. Our donkeys (known around here as “long eared dogs”) are, unlike their cousins the horse, really very aggressive to coyotes, foxes, wolves and other predators. A mother with a foal will not tolerate the presence of a predator in her area and will quickly attack it. The practice of ranchers keeping donkeys with their herds is an old time and effective practice around here.
Unfortunately I am allergic to cats or we would not have a mice problem…..which my good friends with terriers advised us that they have the answer for those small varmints….if only I can convince my husband of the need for another dog.
